Lieut. Esan: The Rescue Man of India

Updated: Sep 16, 2020

Many of us wonder that what the army does in peacetime when there is no war on. Some people believe that they live a life of luxury. This is far from the truth.

Whether it is a Fire, Flood, Shooting, Power Outage, or any other situation, emergencies, unfortunately, hit the headlines often enough that the subject of preparedness is no longer limited to security and facility professionals.

Delta Rescue Squad is a Disaster Management Team comprising of boys under training for a career in rescuing the people during natural disasters.

The risk assessment should be based on an all-hazards approach for those hazards affecting the facility. Many emergency response plans are created in a vacuum, with no input from the end-users. That’s the wrong approach to take. Emergency plans should be the product of an inclusive team instead of a single individual or group.

The team is responding to the natural calamities with immediate assistance to those affected. The response addresses needs such as Water, Food, and Shelter. There are experts in his team, who work in the time of search and rescue. The main objective of a search and rescue team is to rescue trapped survivors of a disaster.

Movies of exceptional bravery, missions, and war ignite the feeling of patriotism in the heart of the young generation. Army officer or commandos would be the dream hero of many kids.

Lieut Esan was such a kid, who was dreaming in the fantasy world, but the dream was so intense, which made him a lieutenant commander. Bravery, courage, and compassion made him rescue many people during his student life. His mother encouraged and motivated him to involve more in social activities and rescue the needy people.

Fighting wars and winning at sports are not the only things India’s Armed Forces are good at- they are our-get-out-of-trouble card when faced with natural disasters. From airlifting the stranded to distributing relief in the most inaccessible areas, our Armed Forces always put the Nation first. On numerous occasions, Indian Armed Forces have also gone beyond the border to extend a helping hand to our neighbors as well.

When the unprecedented rain in the year 2015 in Chennai and neighboring districts claimed hundreds of lives and had caused substantial damage to the infrastructure of the city, the Delta Squad played the leading role in carrying out rescue and relief operations.

The Commando team which moved into the worst flood-hit area in Chennai - Mudichur lake on 2nd December and rescued more than 150 people of which 6 were pregnant women and many senior citizens and children.

Lt. Esan who oversaw the operations shared his experience, this has been the largest flood rescue operations, and many teams were pressed into the service, covering 7 districts and the capital city of Chennai. He still remembers his officers' team aggressively involved in the rescue operations. He proudly exclaims that the delta squad is a squad of officers, very fortunate to work with such hard and core commanders.

Last year Kerala was hard hit by massive floods, and the situation became very severe. Thousands of people were rescued from the flood-hit Indian state Kerala. Military teams, delta squad as well as disaster response forces and local youngsters reached some of the worst-hit areas. Helicopters also brought much-needed supplies to communities cut off by two weeks of incessant rain. Delta squad rescued 250 people. When Calicut was under water on 10th August 2019, this was where lieut Esan rescued a 40 days baby. This was the satisfying moment for him in his journey.

Army leadership must develop and conduct group training sessions to ensure the soldiers are reaching and maintaining their physical fitness levels year-round. Because army soldiers train in such physical, mental and psychological manner and are limited to facilities and equipment, most training sessions are conducted outdoors with little to no additional equipment. Intensity is the name of the game during these training sessions.

The youth of today are well-informed, tech-savvy; the driving force of tomorrow, and instead of blaming the system, youth should come together and mold the nation for a better tomorrow. They are creative and innovative and have the capacity to change the complete picture of India. Even though it is solely their choice to join and serve India in the department of the Armed Forces, they can be motivated. Every year he is reaching nearly 10 thousand Government school students to create awareness and expose the challenging and satisfying career options available for them in the Defense services.

Lt. Esan is helping out educating youth about the Civil Service examination system, providing coaching and assistance for the exams once they clear their board exams, and also the preliminary exams. In this manner, the media can also play an important role in motivating the youth of the nation. And the proudest moment is to receive a salute from his students for the royal highness.

A volunteer disaster rescue team “Delta Squad” led by Lt. Esan from Coimbatore in COVID-19 action to reach Arogyasetu app to nearly 7 lakh people to identify, test, and isolate potential positive cases. They have also supplied ration to tribals and masks to front line workers.

Along with his friend, he is now designing and developing an emergency ventilator for the Indian army and supplying some of the hospitals.
